What Are Your Motives?

The world seeks for knowledge to gain advancement, honor and esteem in the eyes of other men. Let us never be guilty of this in spiritual matters. If we have this motive, one of the first places it will show up will be in “religious exhibitionism.” This is always a give-away. If we possess true spiritual knowledge we will not display it in self-glorifying exhibitions. That is not spiritual knowledge but “worldly knowledge.” By “worldly knowledge” we do not mean knowledge necessarily about the world, but knowledge in the manner of the world. It is merely knowledge about religious matters. It is not true spiritual knowledge.
